- "timber sawn into rough planks," 1662, Amer.Eng., earlier (1552) "disused bit of furniture; heavy, useless objects," probably from lumber (v.), perhaps influenced by Lombard, from the Italian immigrants famous as pawnbrokers and money-lenders in England, originally residents of Lombardy, region in northern Italy named for the Gmc. tribe that settled there after the fall of Rome, the Langobardi, lit. "Long-beards."
